Comicpalooza 2019

Three days and over thirty thousand steps and all I got to show for it is more writer friends and a new lightsaber. My feet are tired and time is short. Here’s a quick recap of my adventure:

Writers Panels

I treat CP as an affordable writers conference surrounded by costumed capers and celebrities. Robot, AI and Cyberpunk were a common theme with panels featuring Martha Wells, Cory Doctorow, Bill Ledbetter and DL Young. The questions and topics that came up gave me nuggets of story ideas to answer them. That’s a good thing.

Meet the Actors

Erick Avari of Star Gate and many other shows and movies is starting a documentary type project about Kindness. He’s a good man, and I like where his heart’s at, so more info on that when his website launches. Mira Furlan dug my Psycop outfit, and we took a picture with her. I dropped by Griffin Newman’s booth, and he’s awesome. I love him as Arthur on The Tick. My days were busy, but I found a moment to drop by Wilson Cruz’s booth. He plays Hugh on Star Trek Discovery. He’s funny, brave and does excellent work. Hopefully, he takes me seriously about making sure the show tells us the other characters names more, because a lot of us are having trouble with that.

Cosplay

I’m terrible about taking pictures (must be why I’m a writer). There spider peoples and giants and voodoo queens. I found a haori, which is a Japanese coat to go with my steampunk. It ties in historically to the Meiji period which coincided with Japanese and Western fashion mixing. Granted, there’s imperialism going on back then as part of it, but the blend of clothing fits history. Seeing how the new wardrobe addition looked gave me another idea, so I i picked up a steampunk looking lightsaber from UltraSabers. Gonna be fun finishing the new look.

Worn Out

We’re tuckered out from a long convention. Time to recover, recharge and turn this all into creative stuff. Tomorrow. Tonight, I sleep.

Authors, Books, & Bigotry?

How do you know if a book is fostering bigoted values? How do you know if the author is a bigot? This week, a friend of mine brought the topic up in relation to misogyny, but I’ve thought about this i

Casting Traps

This is a woke article about potential pitfalls in casting characters in your stories. There, that should chase away the jerks. Let’s get into a topic that’s been floating in my head for some time. Wh

D&D: Story Arcs

This is part two of how I “wing” DMing an adventure using a few tricks from my writing toolbelt. I started with showing how to make up an encounter or scene on the fly because a story is a bunch of th
